PIETRAPORZIO: Ecomuseo della pastorizia (Ecomuseum of pastoralism)

The Ecomuseum of Pastoralism is an enhancing journey that has involved the entire upper valley and in particular the village of Pontebernardo, a hamlet of Pietraporzio, where the ecomuseum buildings are located. The ecomuseum was set up in 1995 to present the territory and its traditions linked to sheep farming, and its foundation lies in the recovery and revitalisation of the Sambucana sheep, an indigenous breed that takes its name from the town of Sambuco in the Stura Valley, it is believed to have been born in this area. The original site of the ecomuseum is a building in the centre of the Pontebernardo village bought and renovated by the Comunità Montana Valle Stura. On the ground floor there is a small cheese factory and a laboratory for processing the meat of the Sambucana sheep; on the upper floor of the same building there is a tasting point which opened in 2008. A small charming square divides this first structure from a second, much larger one, where on the ground floor, there is the Centro Arieti run by the Consortium l'Escaroun, while on the two upper floors are the sales point for Sambucan sheep wool products and the Na Draio per Viours museum tour, which provides visitors with information on sheep breeding and sheep farming.
